TG-RUN's HAYABUSA

0911_HAYABUSA_1.jpg

The Hayabusa is Suzuki's flagship model with a modern build. This custom uses the 2008 model as its base and was built as a TG-RUN Complete Upgrade (a complete custom with high quality in both performance and looks). TG-RUN sells Hayabusas as an authorized Suzuki/Motomap dealer and also performs maintenance, customization, and complete custom building. Their representative, Mr. Sugimoto, told us his take on the qualities of the Hayabusa.

“It is stable enough to be used in a considerable speed range without fear, comfortable for touring, and even fun on the race track. The Hayabusa has great performance, but it can also be ridden slowly without any stress. It's amazing, yet it's ordinary. Ordinary is really the hardest thing to achieve, but this is a bike that pulls it off. We have experience selling all of the different year Hayabusa models and have had almost no severe problems such as engine breakdowns. The basics have not changed from the models up to '07 and after the model change in '08, the series has evolved naturally. It is the embodiment of the word 'flagship',” he says.

If that is so, then what would need to be added to this already high quality series? We asked about the particulars of TG-RUN's Hayabusa customs. “It's a good bike that's well-made in the first place. If you're just riding it normally, the first thing that needs to be done is regular maintenance and replacement of consumable parts. Engine oil, filters, plugs, and tires. When changing tires the newest products should always be selected. For the brakes, not only replacing the pads, but also checking that the hoses and banjos are not too old, and that the calipers are in good working order is important. We also check the drive chain and sprockets. It seems obvious, but since the bike has such high performance, we have to look at each part properly in order to maintain that performance. You don't think of the Hayabusa as being an old bike, but the first model is more than 20 years old, and the second generation is over 10, so we keep that in mind. Also, weight reduction works very well, so I would recommend that for the Hayabusa. Using forged wheels and a titanium exhaust is a start. Changing the front master cylinder to a radial type will improve control, and changing the rear suspension is also effective. It is even better if the rear suspension is set up to match the lighter body.”

This bike is a good example of Mr. Sugimoto's words coming to fruition. From the time of purchase, work has been done focusing on weight reduction and controllability, as well as of course regular maintenance. The owner rides a lot, and he pushes the bike to high speeds on the track. He replaces parts whenever he finds a newer, better model that meets his needs, or when he feels that a part has worn out. Both the bike body and the parts themselves have been constantly refreshed to ensure that they are always functioning at 100%. As you can see in the photos, even after 12 years, the bike still looks as fresh as the day it was built. This machine is an example of the owner's uncompromising efforts in selecting and implementing the parts based on Mr. Sugimoto's advise. It is a good reference for those who are just starting to customize their own bikes.

The machined top bridge and left and right levers are made by K-FACTORY, and a Brembo GP Master Cylinder is also equipped, making for a cockpit that lets the rider concentrate on what they're doing.

Bodyworks

The base is a 2008 model, the first year of the 2nd generation models. The cowls are replaced whenever they become too damaged by gravel and other objects that hit the bike at high speeds. In other words, they are regularly refreshed. The windshield with carbon trim and the mirrors with carbon monocoque body are both by Magical Racing.

The fuel tank has been replaced with an aluminum one made by Beater, and like the cowl, was repainted and refreshed during the process. The inner cowl has also been replaced with a carbon fiber cowl.

The orange and black color, similar to the stock color scheme, was fully painted in the '08 model pattern. The falcon (which is the meaning of Hayabusa in Japanese) illustration on the single seat cowl was also painted just after the bike was purchased.

Chassis

The front forks are Ohlins FG R&T, and the brakes are Brembo GP4RR racing calipers with SUNSTAR racing parts and one-off Omega discs. In the summer of 2020 the bike was brought in for maintenance and the front and rear Ohlins suspensions, Brembo brakes, and Marchesini wheels were overhauled by their respective suppliers. TG-RUN trusts the quality of each supplier, who have experience handling vast amounts of parts, to have an unbiased approach to choosing parts that will maintain their performance.

The Riding Steps are made by K-FACTORY. The engine has been tuned extensively with YOSHIMURA camshafts, new pistons, porting, head polishing, and WPC treatment of internal parts. The exhaust system is a K-FACTORY Full Titanium Exhaust.

The rear shock unit is an Ohlins TTX, and the wheels are currently Marchesini forged magnesium M7Rs in 3.50-17/6.00-17 sizes. From the start of customization, the best wheels at the time have been selected, progressing from Marchesini aluminum, to magnesium, to the new magnesium M7R seen in the photo.
