Personalizing Every Detail: Kawasaki ZRX1200R Custom by Shop Mellows
Shop Mellows' ZRX1200R
"The dealer where the owner originally replaced the carburetor had pulled out, so he tried several stores but was unable to find a setting that he liked. Eventually, he came to our store through an introduction from his touring friends. He was hesitant to go to the same place as everyone else, but now he is a regular customer," says Mr. Nakagawa of Mellows. This ZRX1200R already had the carburetor, exhaust, handlebars, and brakes worked on. "The parts other than the carburetor were just attached, so we adjusted and reworked them according to the owner's preference, including the smallest details. We corrected the duplicate wiring in the electrical system and also optimized each part. The owner liked the condition of the bike after the work was done and later replaced the front forks and swingarm."
"The owner himself is a person who likes to use his hands, so he enjoys working on the undercowl logo area and polishing," adds Mr. Nakagawa. He humbly states that the parts are mainly bolt-ons, but what is really important is not whether or not the parts have been modified for installation, but that the parts are functional. If you just attach parts, you may end up with a number of bikes that look similar, but you have to ensure that each part has the right compatibility and is assembled correctly so that they can perform their functions. Mr. Nakagawa of Mellows always pays attention to this. On the other hand, he also enhances the enjoyment by adding originality to parts that many people seem to have installed. Here, it is the piping for the T-REV internal pressure control valve and the color of the swingarm. The owner says that even the same ZRX owners on his travels ask, "What's going on here?". One of the pleasures of customization is being asked about the specifications. This bike reflects that kind of enjoyment.
Handle
The owner often goes on long touring trips, so the windshield was replaced with MRA Touring Black to reduce wind pressure on the rider. The handlebars are Hardy Road Bar, the meter is an ODAX EL meter, and a Yoshimura Digital Multimeter is added. The left and right masters are Brembo RCS.
The Hyper Pro steering damper is added horizontally under the steering head pipe of the frame via a DIMOTIV Mount.
Bodyworks
The seat was internally molded and reupholstered based on a tuck 'n roll pattern, with KAWASAKI lettering on both ends.
Intake & Exhaust
The response and usability of the stock engine is enhanced by using a TMR-MJN φ38mm carburetor and Yoshimura hand-bent titanium exhaust.
Chassis
Striker's machined aluminum steps are used for both the rider and pillion steps.
The frame is a stock ZRX1200R with added Over Racing sub-frame. The engine is also stock, but the ignition is replaced with the Uotani SP2. A T-REVα system and K-FACTORY oil bypass are also installed, while the oil lines and other parts have been carefully arranged to add to the appearance of the machine.
Front forks are Ohlins RWU. Front brakes are Brembo CNC Titanium Piston Calipers + Sunstar Premium Racing Discs. The gold-colored wheels are also a point of interest.
Rear brakes are Brembo CNC calipers mounted with KEINZ supports and combined with Sunstar premium racing discs.
The swingarm is an OVER Type 10 with a black powder coat finish. The wheels are forged aluminum GALE SPEED Type-E in 3.50-17/5.50-17 sizes. The drive chain is an EKThreeD size 530.
