SANCTUARY's ZRX1200/R
This ZRX1200R is a new RCM Complete Custom by AC Sanctuary. It bears the serial number 528, meaning it is the 528th complete custom built by the shop.
"This is the first ZRX we've done in about five years. Although the DAEG is the successor to the 1200R, we take a slightly different stance for the two. The DAEG is fuel injected, similar to today's Z900RS, while the 1200R is carbureted, and though there is the difference between being water-cooled or air-cooled, I think of it as like a brother to the Zephyr 1100, or similar to the GPZ900R," says Mr. Nakamura, representative of AC Sanctuary.
"From this perspective, the concept of this RCM is to create a ZRX that will serve as a model for the future and we can apply the know-how we've gained from our Ninja RCMs to the project. For the Ninja we remake the harnesses using parts from its successor, which is a ZRX, and the same goes for the engine internals. Parts from the ZZR (rocker arms and pistons) and DAEG (6-speed transmission) can also be used. Taking a look at our original parts from this perspective, it turns out we already had quite a lot of parts for the 1200R. Our ExM Mode Package with exhaust, radiator, and stem, and the OZ wheels. Each of these parts is designed specifically for the model, so we use them in our RCMs as well."
"The frame is originally for 17-inch wheels front and rear, so we didn't reinforce it for street use, but focused on a good balance and powder coated it before use. We wanted to keep the overall look stock-like, but added a fender eliminator kit and modified the seat (the shape of the base was modified to match the side covers, and the internal foam was increased and reshaped). The turn signals and cowl have also been replaced with ones for the DAEG. The overall impression is not a 1200R that has become a fuel injected DAEG, but rather what a carbureted 1200R would be like if it got updated," says Nakamura.
This is not a DAEG conversion, but a modernization of the 1200R. For Sanctuary, who are always working to make their Ninja RCMs better and better, this machine has been put together based on the perfect theme. Looking at this ZRX1200R gives us even greater expectations for the future of their RCM complete customs.
Handle
The gauges made by STACK are imbedded in a one-off panel (left = water temperature gauge, center = digital speedometer & analog tachometer, right = fuel gauge).
The front brake and clutch master cylinders are Brembo CNC Radial and the levers have been changed to ZETA RCM Concept Levers.
Bodyworks
The bikini cowl and front and rear turn signals are DAEG stock, the windshield is made by ACRYPOINT, and the mirrors are Carbon NK-1s by Magical Racing.
The seat base was reworked and molded to match the edge of the side covers, creating a uniformity similar to that of the stock seat.
The seat cowl, with its streamlined design, was modified from one by LEOPARD, and the seat rail was modified in order to install this cowl as if it were stock. The paintjob is done by YF Design.
Engine
The engine was overhauled with the exterior also painted in GUN-KOTE, the crankshaft dynamically balanced, and the journals wrapped. The cylinder has been changed to high-compression using ZZR1200 stock pistons of φ79 x 59.4mm size. The transmission was changed from a 5-speed to a 6-speed using a DAEG transmission, and a ZZR rocker arm was installed in the cylinder head to take advantage of the merits of other bikes in the series. Modern finishing touches such as modification to reduce pumping loss and the installation of a PEGASUS Back Torque Limiter were also applied.
The carburetor is a TMR-MJN φ38mm with dual stack funnels. The main frame is powder coated but not reinforced.
Chassis
Ohlins inverted forks are clamped using the SCULPTURE Inverted Stem Kit SP TYPE-1 (30mm offset). The front brakes are Brembo GP4-RX Calipers + Sunstar Works Expand φ320mm discs.
The swingarm is a SCULPTURE RCM Exclusive Wide Swingarm with block type sway bar, and the rear shocks are NITRON. The front and rear wheels are OZ Racing Aluminum Forged GASSRS-A for DAEG, in 3.50-17/6.00-17(stock is 5.50) sizes. The black and gold drive chain is an EK530RCM.
The rear brake caliper is a Brembo CNC, and a NITRO RACING Weld Craft Titanium Exhaust with Valiant Silencer was chosen for the exhaust system.
The steps are by NITRO RACING. Unlike the Z series, which is SANCTUARY's specialty, the frame is originally designed for modern 17-inch wheels, so there is no modification except for the seat rail. The chain is also offset by 5mm.
