Sleek, Refined, and Unmistakably Mature: KAWASAKI ZEPHYR1100 Custom by Shabon Dama

 10 min read

Shabon Dama's ZEPHYR1100

Even with major updates to its chassis and riding position, this Kawasaki Zephyr 1100 gives off a calm and well-balanced impression overall. The work was carried out by Shabon Dama.

“We’ve known the owner for over 20 years,” says Takigawa, manager of Shabon Dama’s main store. “He told us he plans to ride his Zephyr for life, so for this round, we refreshed and repainted the frame, refinished various parts, and replaced the wheels with GALE SPEED ones. As a whole, it represents the kind of setup we recommend for the Zephyr 1100. The concept was to create a ‘mature and tasteful’ bike.” Takigawa continues: “When we say ‘mature’, we mean a machine that riders with plenty of experience—whether in riding, customizing, or track use—can enjoy for years. This Zephyr is actively used on both the street and track, and there’s really nothing lacking. I think it’s a model example of what a custom motorcycle should be.” By refreshing the frame this time, the bike is now ready to provide an even longer riding life—built with true longevity in mind.

A benchmark for future Zephyr 1100 owners

For riders who plan to get a Zephyr 1100 and start customizing, this bike serves as an excellent reference for what parts to use and where they make a difference.

“The engine is stock, but the frame has been repainted. Since production of the Zephyr ended quite a while ago, it’s important to address aging areas. The swingarm and frame side covers are made by Wheelie, both finished in a rare powder coat—usually, Wheelie’s black parts use RX coating. The stem is our original design to suit the 17-inch front wheel conversion. Both front and rear shocks are Hyperpro units, also our shop originals.

The brakes use Brembo Racing calipers paired with Sunstar rotors from a limited run of five sets we made some time ago. They’re discontinued now, but we continue to produce and collaborate on original parts like these. When you visit, we can recommend the best options to match your preferences.

Other parts include GALE SPEED master cylinders, our original oil cooler, and carbon exterior pieces—all recommended components. In short, it’s a rock-solid selection. We really hope people take this build as a reference.”

As both a large-scale motorcycle accessories retailer and a custom shop, Shabon Dama has worked closely with Zephyr riders since the model first appeared. Having witnessed the market’s evolution and the changes in how bikes are built, the shop continues to offer builds like this that reflect its long-earned insight and know-how.

Handlebar

A cockpit that pursues simplicity and timeless appeal. The gauges remain stock, while the handlebar has been upgraded to a tapered bar, and a Yoshimura Progress meter was added. Most parts used here are Shabon Dama’s recommended components for the Zephyr 1100. Both the left and right master cylinders are from GALE SPEED, and the steering stem is Shabon Dama’s original, designed for the 17-inch front wheel conversion.

Bodywork

The seat is by Supreme, and both the tail cowl and side covers have been replaced with Shabon Dama’s original carbon versions. This also addresses the common cracking issue at the rear of the side covers on the Zephyr 1100. The tail cowl features a semi-transparent “skeleton” paint finish that subtly reveals the carbon weave underneath.

Engine

The carburetor is a TMRφ38mm, paired with Shabon Dama’s original titanium exhaust pipes and a silencer made by Rider House Miyajima.

The engine itself is a stock 1062cc in silver finish, with the crankcase and generator covers replaced with Wheelie’s machined aluminum versions, and a machined sprocket cover from K-Factory. The frame has been re-coated with powder coating for a fresh finish, and the frame side covers are also by Wheelie.

Chassis

The front brake setup consists of Brembo Racing calipers and special rotors developed in collaboration between Shabon Dama and Sunstar. The front fork is a Hyperpro unit originally designed for the CB1300SF, internally modified for this application. The shop’s ability to adapt parts not originally made for the model is one of its key strengths.

At the rear, Hyperpro shocks designed for the ZRX1200 DAEG are also internally reworked. The swingarm is a powder-coated Wheelie unit.
