From Rust to Radiance: KAWASAKI ZEPHYR1100 Custom by Bagus!

Bagus!'s ZEPHYR1100

"This Kawasaki ZEPHYR 1100 was originally almost completely stock, and the reason we ended up modifying it was engine rust. The kind of white rust on the exterior that I'm sure you all know. We started working on it to clean that up, and when we took the engine down, we could see the frame, so we decided to clean that as well, and that lead to the suspension and then the exterior, snowballing into this full customization," says Mr. Tsuchiya of Bagus Motorcycle regarding how this bike came to be.

The flat black finished engine and repainted frame bring it to a level even higher than when new, and it certainly looks good. The owner happily agreed to the further customizations that were done, as his original basic desire to clean up the bike deepened into the desire to improve it overall and be able to enjoy it for many years to come, leading to the current specifications. While the fully painted exterior gives this machine a lot of flair, it would be a perfectly solid custom even if it were just equipped with a stock-color exterior. The specs that came about from the desire to clean up this bike are quite superb.

The engine, by the way, remains stock internally. Tsuchiya comments, "Bikes that look dirty have often been treated badly and their insides generally reflect just that. On the other hand, a machine that looks clean for the distance it has traveled is likely to have been taken care of with careful maintenance, such as oil changes. In this case, the bike was in good condition, so we left the insides as is. For all the bikes that come in to our garage, we check the condition by test driving and measuring compression, and match the work we do with the customer's requests. For bikes that emit smoke or consume a lot of oil, we will also work on the inside of the engine. However, since each customer has a budget, there are cases where a customer will come in with a different order and we inform them of the condition of the bike, but then decide to work on it at the next opportunity. Including this type of case, we have recently had an increase of customers wanting to clean up, maintain and customize their Zephyrs, especially the 1100. We also receive requests for the same customizations as bikes featured on our website, which is always a pleasure to hear. However, some of them were made quite a while ago, so we consider changes in parts and methods, and rearrange some things to update those customs.”

To take advantage of the parts that can be improved through customization, the base must first be in good condition. Then, a combination of personalization and upgrades complete the process. This method is effective for the Zephyr 1100 and increases its appeal. This bike is a good example of just that.

Handle

Two ACTIVE Digital Monitors have been lined up in the cockpit. The handlebar is EFFEX, and an ACTIVE Stem Kit was installed to accommodate the conversion to a 17-inch front wheel. The left and right master cylinders are Brembo RCS with radial pumps, and the turn signals are SPHERE LIGHT Sequential to give a modern look.

Bodyworks

The seat is made of Alcantara leather, and the shape has been adjusted to provide high quality and comfort. A bikini cowl was also added, and the exterior is wrapped.

Engine

The 1062cc four-cylinder engine with DOHC2 valve and twin plug head was in good shape and remains stock inside. The exterior was cleaned up to make it look brand new, and when the engine was taken down for that work, the frame was freshened up as well.

The carburetor is an FCR φ37mm. The customization of this bike started with cleaning up rust that had appeared on the cylinder head, cylinders, and crankcase of the engine that originally had a silver finish, but now this black finish looks so good you'd assume it came like this brand new.

Chassis

The front forks are Ohlins RWU, and the front brakes are Brembo 4-piston calipers with SUNSTAR Premium Racing Type C Discs (the inner disc collar is the same as on their Works Expand Discs).

The wheels are forged aluminum Marchesini M10RS in 3.50-17/6.00-17 sizes. The 17-inch front and rear wheels and other weight reductions make the bike light and easy to ride.

The rear brakes are composed of a Brembo CNC 2-piston caliper and SUNSTAR disc. The rear suspension uses an ACTIVE Press Forming Swingarm with Ohlins shocks for a good balance of performance and looks. The exhaust is an original Bagus titanium exhaust.
