Distinctive Details: KAWASAKI Z900RS Custom by 0024 Works
0024 Works' Z900RS
This Z900RS is by 0024 Works in Toyama, where many Kawasaki Z900RS owners gather. Like the shop representative Mr. Onishi's Z900RS ('20-'21 Candy Tone Green base model), it features clip-on handlebars and an American Dream Cafe Racer Cowl, but a comparison of the two machines reveals many unexpected differences.
"For this bike, the owner wanted red and black, so we did the tiger pattern with red stripes. The BEET steps were also special-ordered in red and black," says Mr. Onishi of 0024 Works. The wire spoke wheels with red hubs and nipples, black-tone spokes, and black rims are the most distinctive feature of this custom. "The rim kit had just come out, so we tried it. It makes the wheels a little heavier, but the look is definitely unique," says Onishi.
Like Onishi's Z900RS, the cafe racer cowl is mounted with brackets made by 0024 Works, but if you look closely, you can see that the mounting position is different. Onishi comments, "The two bikes have different handlebar drop angles and mine is lower. So, we made the cowl position a little higher to match the handlebar angle that the owner wanted." You only notice the difference when you compare them closely, but you can catch a glimpse of the craftsmanship that goes into making each custom unique. By the way, this custom was not yet complete at the time of the photo shoot. There are plans to install red Bitubo rear shocks and a front cartridge kit, as well as changing the brake lines. These further updates are sure to bring the bike closer to completion and we'd love to see them too.
Handle
The handlebars are HURRICANE clip-ons that clamp to the front forks. Since the stock risers are removed, the holes in the top bridge are covered with an original top bridge cover by 0024 Works. The levers, grips, and bar ends were also replaced and chosen in colors to match the rest of the bike.
Bodyworks
The half type cowl is American Dream's Cafe Racer Cowl Kit. The brackets are made by 0024 Works to minimize interference with other parts.
The seat is a tuck 'n roll type. The exterior has been painted red and black based on the Z900RS '20-'21 Candy Tone Green Tiger Pattern.
The added under cowl is also the same color scheme as the body, and matches so well that is looks as though it were an original stock part.
Engine
The engine and frame are stock, with frame sliders in front of the cylinders and a Doremi Collection Core Guard on the radiator.
Chassis
The step kit, including the pillion step, is made by BEET and was special-ordered in red and black to match the body color.
For the wheels, which stand out on this custom, a 36-spoke RK aluminum rim kit for the Z900RS (3.50-17/5.50-17 size, machined hub) was available, so that was chosen. The front fork is the stock 41mm, but there are plans to install a cartridge kit in the future.
The exhaust system is American Dream's NEO Short Titanium Quenching Type, and the rear shock, swingarm, and brake system are currently Z900RS stock, but there are plans to install Bitubo rear shocks and stainless steel mesh brake lines.
