A Long-Awaited Classic: KAWASAKI Z900RS Custom by Doremi Collection

A style that can truly be called long-awaited: the modern Z900RS which pays homage to the Z1 (both models with round tanks), now projects the look of the square tank Z1000Mk.II, the successor to the Z1 series. The Z900RS Mk.2 Style, which Doremi Collection unveiled unannounced on the first day of the 2024 Tokyo Motorcycle Show, had a big impact. And you can see why from the photos which show how natural the custom looks, not at all like parts were just stuck on.

Originally, at the same time as the Z900RS announcement in the fall of 2017, Doremi Collection announced a Z1 look as a customization style proposal, and in March 2018, shortly after the Z900RS went on sale, they presented a concept model at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show featuring an Mk.2-spec exterior with square tank, as well as a supercharger. The response was great at that time as well. Five years have passed since then and the Z900RS Mk.2 Style shown here is the result of the refinement of Doremi Collection's know-how gained from designing previous exterior sets, including those for other models.

Doremi Collection has already released exterior sets for the Z900RS such as the Z1 Style, Ninja Style, and Lawson Style. Each exterior set is built around a steel tank. The Z1 Style features an inner tank and tank cover to portray the slim Z1 tank shape. This makes it possible to change colorings in no time if you have pre-colored covers. For the Ninja Style and Lawson Style, each set includes a special inner tank to match the tank shape of the respective motifs. The coloring of the exterior for these two styles can also be ordered at a fixed price.

We thought that the Mk.2 Style might follow in suit, but this time it's different. The fuel tank will be made of steel and designed to completely replace the original tank. This is the same method as with the Z2 Style and the square tank FX Style which they developed for the Zephyr series, and it also allows the fuel tank to have the same fuel capacity as the stock one. It also has the advantage of stabilizing production and improving productivity.

As you can see in the photos, the square design of the tank makes it look large, but when viewed from above, it is slim, fully expressing the rugged yet sleek look of the Mk. II. The overall design is firmly based on the Mk. II, but also balanced with the Z900RS itself. The side covers and tail cowl were initially planned to be made to order in FRP resin, but the decision was made to produce them in the same ABS + resin as stock. The production process uses molding, which improves both quality and productivity.

The exterior shown in the photos is a prototype, and the seat, tail cowl, side covers, and other parts will be made to be even more balanced before commercialization. With the prototype looking this good, the finished product is sure to be even more pleasing to the eye.

Electrical

The front and rear turn signals and brackets (both prototypes) portray the Mk.2 look without fail.

Bodyworks

The Z1000Mk.II square tank look, which had been in the works since 2018, right after the Z900RS was introduced, has been realized by manufacturing a steel tank with the same fuel capacity as the stock one. Doremi Collection has a track record of manufacturing many metal fuel tanks, including exterior sets for the Zephyr series and aluminum tanks for the CB1100 Type R, and this experience was put to good use for this project.

Other than the fuel tank, the set will include side cover front sections, side covers, tail cowl (each made of ABS + resin), Mk.2 style seat assembly with exclusive fender eliminator kit, LED Mk.2 tail lamp with red square reflector, chrome front fender (made of ABS + resin), and the necessary mounting brackets.

The line from the seat to the tail is also reminiscent of the Mk.2. It should be even more balanced in the finished product.

Engine

On the left side of the engine, a Doremi Collection Z1 Type Custom Generator Cover (the black part is colored) was installed to create an air-cooled Z feel.

Chassis

The front end retains the stock configuration except for the Z900RS Chrome Front Fender, which is used to enhance the classic look. This area can be changed according to each user's preference.

The bike is also equipped with a megaphone-shaped slip-on exhaust to enhance the classic feel. The rear area also keeps the stock configuration as a base.

Faux twin shocks are installed at the rear to further enhance the look. These fake shocks do not actually work, and the stock monoshock takes care of the suspension function, so there is no problem replacing the suspension itself. The Z900RS SE was used as the base model for this custom, which is why the stock front and rear wheels and front fork outer tubes are gold in color.
