Ninja Evolution: KAWASAKI GPZ900R Custom by Bull Docker TAGOS
Bull Docker TAGOS's GPZ900R
Since it is a model that has been around for 40 years, people may tend to think that anyone who rides a GPZ900R Ninja currently is someone who has always had it or who longed to ride one since the time of its debut. But is that actually the case? "It seems that a lot of younger people also ride the Ninja. But they don't know much about the model, so even if the condition is not so good, they assume it's just because the bike was old already when they bought it. Either that, or they are not even sure whether it's in good shape or not. We often have people like that come into our shop. We don't specialize in Ninjas, but we get a lot of them and we're equipped to deal with them," says Mr. Tago of Bull Docker TAGOS. The Ninjas that are brought into the shop vary in specifications and condition. However, this one looks like a good example of how to best customize it if you get your hands on one now.
"A customer who was originally riding a Ninja consulted us about customizing it, but he had to move away for work, so we sold him this Ninja that we had already finished. We had displayed this bike at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show and at the time it was rare to have a custom that used the stock full cowl. The concept was to make a bike that has moved one step forward from the stock specs. Forged aluminum 17-inch LAVORANTE LEGGENDA wheels were used for the front and rear, and YSS PD valves (inner valve that adds appropriate damping force) with matching HYPERPRO springs were installed on the late model stock front fork. For the rear, we used HYPERPRO shocks designed for 17-inch wheels," says Tago. Bull Docker TAGOS is an authorized servicer of HYPERPRO parts with extensive expertise in shock and spring selection and specification changes, and they have also been racing Ninjas for many years. Mr. Tago himself has also ridden a Ninja in many different situations, so he is able to put that know-how to good use. "We put an emphasis on the riding position, so the handlebars use a TAGOS Cruise Stem Kit Type-1 and TAGOS Ninja Bar Z, the seat is a TAGOS Riding Seat, and the steps are K-Factory Riding Steps. The engine is 945cc with Wossner φ74mm forged pistons. After purchasing the bike, the owner rode it so much that he has already had the engine overhauled once." Being able to ride it this much shows that this bike was a custom that made the owner want to keep on riding. If Ninjas were being newly made today, this custom incorporates the elements that people would want to see, along with the stock-like looks that most people think of when they picture a Ninja. This custom is certainly a great example to go by.
Handle
The Meter Cover and Racer Replica Mirrors (TYPE-5 Head) are by Magical Racing. The stem is a TAGOS Ninja Cruise Stem Kit TYPE-1 to match the 17-inch wheels, and the handlebars are replaced with a TAGOS Ninja Bar Z, with a position slightly closer to the rider than stock. The key cylinder is covered with a TAGOS Fun Key Protect Seal (the red part, slightly raised to prevent scratching).
The forged body radial mount left and right master cylinders are GALE SPEED VRC, which enhance control and touch.
Bodyworks
The seat is a TAGOS Riding Seat (reupholstered) that is slightly raised while the sides are shaved down to improve footing and maneuverability. The seat stopper is placed farther forward than stock to minimize sliding when accelerating.
Engine
The engine was converted to 945cc with a forged Wossner x TAGOS φ74 Oversize Piston Kit. This specification improves power while avoiding the need for major work. After installation, the bike got a lot of mileage so the engine was overhauled. The clutch release is by K-Factory, and a TAGOS Radiator Guard is added to the radiator. You will also notice that the entire bike is finished in colors similar to the Top Gun Ninja with the stock full cowl.
The carburetor is an FCR φ37mm with a DNA Air Filter. The titanium 4-2-1 exhaust system is made by K-Factory.
Chassis
The step is a K-Factory Riding Step and the color is Stay Gold. The drive chain is RK's 50XXW (530 equivalent).
The front forks are φ41mm stock late-model Ninja (A7-A11 in this case) with YSS PD valves and HYPERPRO springs, adding ample damping force and good road-following performance. The front brakes are stock 6-piston calipers with Sunstar Premium Racing Discs and stainless steel mesh lines.
The rear suspension consists of a ZX-10 (Kawasaki's flagship model from 1988-1990 and successor to the GPZ900R) stock swingarm and HYPERPRO shocks designed for the 17-inch Ninja.
The rear brakes use a Brembo 2P caliper and wave disc. The front and rear wheels are forged aluminum LAVORANTE LEGGENDA with sizes 3.50-17 and 6.00-17. The rear tire is 180/55ZR17.
