Unlocking the Infinite Potential of Katana: GSX1100S Custom

QUARTER's GSX1100S KATANA

The changes made to this GSX1100S KATANA include replacing the tank with a dry carbon tank, installing an adjustable angle windshield, changing the seat, and fabricating a one-off front disc from Plusμ. The tank is made of dry carbon, and it was fabricated by creating a jig based on the Katana stock, making a female mold, forming it, and then having it heated. Although this bike had previously been converted to an aluminum tank, the line with the cowl on the front side was slightly off, so it was corrected in the new work to eliminate any sense of discomfort.

The bike has also been converted to a monoshock system, and the custom modifications have brought it closer to modern bikes. With the use of carbon fiber in this latest customization, the bike has become even lighter, weighing in at about 200kg even when fully fueled, which is comparable to modern super sports. This number means it has shed almost 70kg from the original Katana. Additionally, the carbon tank has lightened the upper part of the bike, making it easy and agile to handle during test rides. While the bike was already capable of performing well, these advantages have further improved its performance. At present, it is already a sufficiently futuristic bike, with plans for further improvements in the future. I would definitely like to see its evolved form.

Bodyworks

The windshield has evolved into an adjustable angle type. The brackets are machined from a block, rather than plate, for added strength. The multifunctional meter uses an AIM Mychron3plus, and the harnesses and circuits are also one-off fabrications by QUARTER.

The license plate bracket extending from the subframe is also made of dry carbon. Above the license plate is a small rear indicator and above that is the taillight.

Handle

The left and right master cylinders are made by Brembo. The SOQI's inverted front forks for VMAX and has been tuned with ME (Magical Effect) by Scuderia Okumura.

Engine

The engine was replaced with a '91 GSX-R1100 oil-cooled engine at an early stage. It has been lightened by porting and incorporating a Yoshimura ST-1 camshaft, and can produce a maximum output of 150ps. The clutch cover is a skeleton type, and the carburetor is equipped with TMR-MJN Black Absolute/Dual Stack.

When they made it oil-cooled, they changed the oil cooler to a large two-stage type that ensures heat release. For the core guard, QUARTER's original mountain-shaped net was adopted to avoid loss of cooling effect.

Chassis

The tank bracket was already titanium-plated. The frame was reinforced with a Yoshimura 1135R type, the pivot's diameter was increased from Φ16 to 20mm and widened by 40mm.

The main frame was found to have corrosion in the middle, so the bottom part (the under loop section) was replaced and widened. This seems to be a relatively common issue with the GSX1100S. The rearsets are stock, but there are plans to change them in the future. And, of course, the distinctive 4-2-1 full exhaust is a titanium one-off product made by QUARTER.

The front disc rotors have been replaced with a one-off product by Plusμ. The brake pads have also been changed to make the lever response smoother when the brakes are applied.
