Spencer Style, Precision Ride: HONDA CB1000R Custom by ADVANTAGE

ADVANTAGE's CB1000R

This 2020 CB1000R is painted in the iconic Spencer color scheme—originally seen on the 1982 North American-spec CB750FC, which shined in the world of AMA Superbike racing. It’s a custom demo bike built by ADVANTAGE to promote their original forged aluminum wheel brand, EXACT.

“We grew up with the CB in Spencer colors,” says Mr. Nakanishi of ADVANTAGE. “But applying that exact look to the CB1000R’s bodywork wasn’t easy. We worked closely with our trusted paint shop, Morita Design, and went through several decal prototypes before finalizing this version. The tail section was custom-built by TK Factory." By adding a compact tail cowl to the modern CB, which features a shortened rear and no tail cowl, they’ve managed to incorporate the CB-F’s classic lines seamlessly.

While the bodywork catches your eye, the wheels are equally worth a closer look. This CB1000R is fitted with EXACT2 forged wheels, designed for easy bolt-on installation. At the rear, along with the single-sided swingarm, a unique 6.25 x 17-inch wheel is used—an uncommon size not available from other manufacturers. It’s paired with BRIDGESTONE’s premium sport tire, the BATTLAX HYPERSPORT S23.

“We recommend BRIDGESTONE tires because we trust the brand. The reason we chose the 6.25-inch rear width is simple; the 200/55-17 size S23 tire—one size up from the stock 190/55-17—performs best on a 6.25 rim, which is its designated standard size. Matching the tire to its optimal rim width allows for easier wheel setup and helps avoid unnecessary issues,” explains Nakanishi.

ADVANTAGE has used a similar setup before, combining a 6.25 width EXACT wheel with a 200-size BRIDGESTONE RS11 on the Ninja H2, which also has a single-sided swingarm. Their philosophy is to unlock the tire’s full potential by choosing wheels tailored to the tire’s design. Though the wheel design may appear the same across models, EXACT wheels are constantly evolving, with updates to align with the latest tires. As a result, riders enjoy cornering thanks to the wheels’ optimized rigidity and reduced weight.

Much like its Spencer-style paint job, this CB1000R’s wheel setup makes it a valuable reference for anyone customizing a single-sided swingarm machine.

Handlebar

The fuel tank, gauges, and handlebar area remain stock CB1000R, while Morita Design has applied the Spencer color scheme across the body, giving it a "CB1000F" look.

Bodywork

The stock CB1000R doesn’t come with a tail cowl, but this bike is fitted with a one-off integrated seat cowl by TK Factory, reminiscent of the CB750F’s ducktail and side covers. There are likely many CB1000R fans who would love this kind of styling and feel it enhances the bike’s appeal.

Engine

Aside from the wheels and brake discs, the bike is essentially in stock 2020 CB1000R form, but the 999cc inline-four engine is fitted with a prototype clutch friction plate currently under development by F.C.C.

Chassis

The rearsets and the 4-into-1 exhaust system with right-side silencer are also stock CB1000R components.

The front and rear suspension remain stock, but the wheels are replaced with ADVANTAGE’s EXACT2 Racing 10 forged aluminum wheels, featuring a ten-spoke design. The front uses the stock 3.50 x 17 size, paired with a 120/70ZR17 BRIDGESTONE S23 tire—the same size as stock.

The front brake discs have been replaced with ADVANTAGE’s original Direct Drive Racing Discs, in which the inner and outer rotors are connected over a surface rather than a single point, helping to suppress rotor distortion and eliminate heat-related issues like warping.

The rear brake system remains stock, and the single-sided swingarm layout means the wheel mounting area is visible from the right side.

The rear wheel is a 6.25 x 17-inch EXACT2 Racing 10, one size wider than stock, chosen because 6.25 inches is the standard rim width for the 200/55-17 BRIDGESTONE S23 tire. The D.I.D 520ZVMX gold chain was also selected to complement the wheel color.
