Setting the Standard: KAWASAKI Z1-R Custom by BULL DOCK

BULL DOCK's Z1-R

BULL DOCK's full custom GT-Ms always reflect the latest specifications of the time they are made, and the same is true of this Kawasaki Z1-R, created as a demo bike and the very first GT-M. The owner is Mr. Wakui of BULL DOCK himself, and this bike also reflects the future of their GT-M customs.

As you can see, the base of this custom is the Z1-R, and this is where we would like to focus our attention this time. BULL DOCK works on all different Z series bikes, from the Z1 to Z1000 with their round tanks, the square tank Z1000Mk.II and Z750FX, and of course the later Z1000J/R models. So, why was the Z1-R chosen? Mr. Wakui explains the reason as follows.

"I just like the Z1-R. I like all Zs of course, but the Z1-R is the most difficult to customize, so I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I complete a customization. Let's say you want to customize your Z1-R. Even if you make some quick modifications here and there, it will still look like stock. It's difficult to exceed the original build because the Z1-R itself was originally a custom made by the manufacturer. With the Z or Mk.II, a short pipe exhaust, carburetor, oil cooler, and new wheels would be enough to make it a custom. In the case of the Z1-R, that's not enough. Unless you don't just change individual parts but also consider the entire bike as a whole it won't look good or like a custom bike. The same is true for the ride quality; if you don't do the right things, it won't run well, and I find that challenge worthwhile. The single seat, which is a key point for exterior customization, was first made to look good on the Z1-R, and from there we made one for each Z model."

This Z1-R is beautifully executed as a custom bike. One of the goals when building a GT-M is "to make a bike that could pass for an original model", and that level of perfection can be seen in the ease of use, rideability, and natural appearance of this amazing GT-M custom.

Handle

The gauges are a combination of a needle type engine tachometer + multifunction digital gauge and fuel gauge on an original 3D sculpted carbon panel with a STACK meter. The front brake master cylinder and hydraulic clutch master cylinder are both GALE SPEED Elaborate. The stem is a Mccoy by BULL DOCK, which provides the necessary amount of trail for 17-inch wheels. A compact HYPERPRO Steering Damper is also mounted on the steering head.

Bodyworks

The bikini cowl/windshield and single seat (the seat itself is a Mccoy Supreme, which maintains comfort and quality even at this size), and aluminum tank are BULL DOCK Mccoy, and the mirrors are carbon by Magical Racing.

Engine

The engine is a 1230cc spec with Pistal Racing forged pistons and Extra Super Tarkalloy sleeves (154ps/8000rpm spec at the time of the photoshoot, it has now been increased to 1260cc with a φ78mm bore). The cylinder head is from a Z1000J and twin plugs are used. A Mccoy 6-speed Cross Transmission was installed, and the power generation/ignition system was also originally made. The engine moves the 184kg dry weight of the bike nimbly, and the exterior has a stylish finish.

Intake & Exhaust

The carburetor is a YOSHIMURA TMR-MJN φ40mm with dual stack funnel specs. The oil bypass line to the cylinder head can also be seen in this photo.

The full titanium exhaust is a Win Mccoy Neo optimized for the Z. The front and rear wheels are BST Carbon 3.50-17/6.00-17 size, the front forks and rear shocks are both collaborations of Mccoy and NITRON, and the pentagonal reinforced swingarm is a Mccoy original, giving this bike the full package.

Chassis

The step kit is also a Mccoy design optimized for the Z series. The chainline has also been optimized with outboard and offset sprockets.
