◇The heater section uses stainless steel sheet foil around the entire circumference to improve quick heating and heater strength.
◇The grip heater switch is equipped with a voltage monitoring function and indicates the voltage by blinking LED.
◇With the voltage monitoring function, when the voltage of the vehicle drops, the power supply of the grip heater automatically turns off, and the indicator blinks to inform you, protecting your vehicle.
■Development concept
Honda's "grip heaters" have been developed with the priority of being as "close" as possible to the grips used on Honda motorcycles. In the development of Honda motorcycles, the importance of grips for accelerator operation, clutch and brake operation is high, and a variety of materials and thicknesses have been considered.Removing such important grips and installing "grip heaters" as an optional accessory can lead to a risk of anxiety for the user in order to obtain comfort. Therefore, Honda R&D Center, Inc. has made an effort to realize the same characteristics of the rubber material used in Honda motorcycles and the same thickness as possible.Honda R&D Center, which develops Honda's srtock products, believes that the ultimate "grip heater" is a grip that cannot be recognized when it is installed on a Honda motorcycle.
Honda's stock grip heater is a product developed jointly by Honda R&D Center, Koito Manufacturing Co., Ltd. which is strong in electric systems such as headlights, and Mitsubishi Cable Industries, Ltd. which is strong in research and development of electric systems and wiring systems in the automobile industry.
The "grip heater" developed by Honda today was developed as a genuine Honda product through repeated installation tests on Honda motorcycles, focusing on not affecting handling stability while giving maximum consideration to the rider's usability and other factors. In addition, Honda's "grip heaters" are designed to be gentle, with maximum consideration given to power consumption. The maximum power consumption is 18W (28W for the all-round type), which is almost the same level of power consumption as that of motorcycle blinkers and makes it possible to generate heat. This allows for a more comfortable motorcycle life with less impact on the motorcycle itself.
There are two types of "grip heaters" sold by Honda: the "half-circle type" with the heating element affixed to half the circumference of the inner piece and the "full-circle type" with the heating element wrapped around the entire circumference. Each of these is available as a stock accessory to suit the purpose and use of the motorcycle. The "half-round type" is mainly for scooters and business models that are not expected to travel for a long time, while the "full-round type" is for medium and large sports models that are used for long-distance travel such as touring.
Honda's "grip heater" comes with a "controller" that controls the temperature on all models. This "controller" is compact, yet water resistant and easy to operate, and as a motorcycle manufacturer, it is designed to meet the needs of motorcycle riders. In particular, the temperature setting has been determined by various test riders through a series of tests to find the best possible temperature that the rider can feel while riding. The features are as follows.
1. The PUSH type switch is adopted to ensure that it can be operated with a gloved left hand.
2. The switch system is a rotary type, and it is possible to set the temperature to OFF and 5 levels by PUSH operation.
3. The digital control system allows the maximum temperature to be adjusted according to the rider's feeling (80 degrees or more on the right and left sides: when using 12V) It is possible to adjust the temperature in 5 stages, decreasing the temperature in 20% intervals from.
4. 3 LED indicators allow you to easily and reliably check the temperature level at any time of the day or night.
5. Built-in battery voltage monitoring system automatically stops power supply to the "Grip Heater" when the battery voltage drops. The LED indicator flashes to indicate an automatic shut-off state, and the LED indicator lights up when the system starts up again to indicate a restart. This system reduces the effect of low voltage on the motorcycle itself.
■Heating element
The basic structure of the "grip heater" is that a heating element is built into the handlebar grip and the heat is generated by energizing (passing electricity through) it.The basic structure is that a heating element is installed in the outer circumference of the inner piece (inner pipe) and covered with a rubber material.
And, in the "grip heater", three factors, "sufficient temperature", "temperature rise in a short time", and "appropriate heat point" are important points. The material of the heating element is an important factor in realizing these points. The "grip heaters" sold since the 1970s used "Ni-Cr" (nickel-chrome wire) or "FPC (Flexible Print Circuit)" as heating elements. However, the Ni-Cr wire has two disadvantages: "it takes a long time from the start of operation to reach the set temperature" and "it is difficult to set the heat spot (heat generation at a specified point)".This is a stressful time for a motorcyclist, even with comfortable equipment. In addition, although the FPC has no problem in terms of the rise time to the set temperature and the heat spot setting, it has a disadvantage that it is weak against pressure. This is a major problem for the circular shape of the grip heater, and is a major factor in the failure of the grip heater.
In order to improve the corrosion resistance, the alloy stainless steel SUS (Stainless Used Steel) was introduced. The SUS used in Honda's grip heaters is extremely thin at 0.1 mm thick, and the width of the band is doubled to minimize the risk of wire breakage even when it is bent to fit the shape of the grip.In addition, the thickness of the grip can be made thinner due to the improvement of molding, and the grip can be closer to the standard grip (non-heater equipped) on Honda motorcycles.
A comparison test of "the temperature rising time" between "the grip heater" using SUS and "the grip heater" using FPC showed that the SUS type reached the maximum temperature (saturation temperature) in half the time compared to the FPC type.In other words, Honda's grip heater, which uses SUS, considers the rider's feelings first as a stock motorcycle accessory, and allows the rider to feel warmth in a very short time after starting the engine (by turning on the grip heater) in cold weather, enabling comfortable riding right from the start of riding. It has become possible to realize comfortable riding right from the start of driving.
